Chris Cheney lives with his family in Rexburg, Idaho. He’s been in the bit, spur, and saddle business for 23 years building mostly California style bits and Wade saddles. With the help of friends, he built his first bit as part of a horse trade as a teenager. The first bit he made while at Miller Bit and Spur School was coincidentally a crescent cheek pattern like this year’s theme. It’s his goal to continually refine his workmanship and he loves to see the gear he makes get used.
In the crescent area of this year’s bit, it is filigreed and sculpted in the steel then sterling and fine silver was formed and inlaid to allow depth to the engraving. It has a 5.25″ wide by 3″ tall Barqueno mouthpiece that’s been offset towards the front of the cheek to help add balance. The steel has a nitre blue finish, including the handmade slobber and rein chain, and sterling conchos with heavy silver rope to complete the bit.

Please register on the Cowboy Arts and Gear Museum under “My Account” to place a bid.  All payments will go through PayPal.

Each bid begins at a reserve price set by each individual maker.  15% of proceeds over the reserve will be donated to the Cowboy Arts and Gear Museum.

Bids are to be placed in $50.00 increments.

Each bid placed will be followed by an email confirming your bid.  If you are the final bidder at the completion of the auction, payment will be automatically made through PayPal.  Please make sure your account information is up to date with all accurate shipping information.  All necessary tax deductible information will be provided in the package when it ships.  We are a 501(c) (3) and registered State of Nevada non-profit organization.

All winning bids will be assessed an additional $35.00 shipping fee to cover the freight cost and insurance on the bit (Domestically).  International shipment fees will be determined at the time of shipping.  Your bit will be shipped promptly upon collection of funds including all shipping expenses.

    Dennis grew up in the Santa Ynez valley.  San Luis Obispo is to the North, Ventura to the South and Santa Barbara is in the middle.  This is the home to many Vaqueros and Californios, deeply rooted in the Spanish style traditions.  Many bit makers have come from this area in California such as G.S. Garcia, Mardueno and Juan Flores.  Dennis is proud to be from a valley where such amazing artists have produced traditional Vaquero pieces that are now highly sought after.

    Dennis, a cowboy by trade, modified his first bit while cowboying in 1975.  Dennis spent a few decades working on his now trade and perfected his passion when he worked exclusively with Chuck Erwin in 2009.  Chuck spent many years teaching and grooming Dennis to become the maker he is today.

    Barak Freeman-

    Barak Freeman is a self-taught silversmith who originally became interested in silverwork as a teenager.  He wanted nice gear but couldn’t afford it on his cowboying wages so he started reading silversmithing books, watching old VHS tapes and learning through trial and error.

    Barak likes to produce functional pieces that can and will be used.  He would rather see his work hanging on someone’s horse than hanging on a wall.  He especially enjoys doing inlay work on his bits.

    He currently lives in Spring Creek, Nevada with his wife and two young sons.  He owns and operates his own trucking company and enjoys spending time with his family, roping, riding colts and teaching his kids.
